Set against
the backdrop of an openwork Maltese cross, the richly ornamented three-dimensional fleur de lis at the heart of this pendant takes on even more meaning. The fleur de lis was traditionally used by French royalty, and was a symbol of purity. More recently it has come to represent the strength and loyalty of the people of New Orleans in the face of adversity. The Maltese cross originally took its name from the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, an order known for their care of the poor and the sick. The order later moved to the isle of Malta and the cross has been adopted by any group caring for the sick and injured, although in modern times it has become most closely associated with those who care for their fellow citizens in the role of firefighters. This dramatic pendant measures just over 3/4" x 7/8" with a hidden 5mm bail for a clean look.
