One of the most
romantic of Scottish symbols since the 1700's, Luckenbooth pendants traditionally feature a pair of intertwined hearts surrounding a Scottish thistle and the crown of Mary, Queen of Scots. The name comes from their sale from the Luckenbooths or "locked booths", small stalls at the green of the St. Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. This style of jewelry has a long and romantic history and was traditionally exchanged between lovers at the time of betrothal. They would then be pinned to their infant's blanket or shawl to guard the baby from the curse of evil spirits or the sithean (fairy spirits). The crossing of the hearts in the center was also crafted to form a letter M for Mary and these were often called Mary or Queen Mary brooches as well. This lovely Luckenbooth brooch measures just over 1 1/8" x 1 3/8".
